Too little attention is generally given to the preservation of health. It is far better to prevent disease than to know how to treat it when contracted. It is the duty of every person, for his own sake, and for the sake of humanity, tinform him in regard to the laws of life and conscientiously to obey them. All need to become acquainted with that most wonderful of all organisms, the human body. They should understand the functions of the various organs and the dependence of one upon another for the healthy action of all. They should study the influence of the mind upon the body and of the body upon the mind, and the laws by which they are governed. Adventist Principles for Healthy Living :
Vegetarian diet is ideal for health and to be taken - 3 meals a day, 5 hours apart, Breakfast largest, Lunch moderate and Supper light (if eaten) 2-3 hours before bed time. Avoid munching between meals.
Vegetarians have Greater Endurance We see that with a high meat diet (high in both protein and fat), cyclists became exhausted after about an hour. When on a mixed diet, lower in meat, fat, and protein, and higher in plant foods, they could peddle at high speed for almost twice as long—a total of 1.9 hours. However, when on a vegetarian diet, they went for 2.78 hours until exhaustion set in.
Morning exercise best must be regular, brisk but not too much, varied and enjoyed by all ages. Must be at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week, clothing should be loose. Improves - efficiency of Muscles, Bones, Circulation, Lungs, Heart, Blood vessels, Blood pressure, Digestion, Immune system, Brain, Sleep, Ideal weight, Slows aging process, Relaxes, etc… Exercise Improves the Quality of Life As physical activity increases from less than 500 calories expended per week in exercise, mortality rates decrease. The greatest benefit is for those who expend greater than 3500 calories per week in exercise, but great benefit is obtained from exercising as little as 750 calories expended per week. In considering all of the thrilling evidence about the benefits of exercise, perhaps the most startling effect is the widespread prevention of disease that would occur if everyone merely exercised regularly. Current estimates are that the lack of exercise in America causes up to one-third of deaths from the following three major diseases: coronary heart disease, colon cancer, and diabetes. In health and in sickness drink 2 to 3 litres in 24 hours. Body prefers slightly warm to cool water. Drink enough water to keep the urine always pale. Essential for - Circulation, Body temperature, Moistening eyes, Lubricating joints and bones, Saliva, Digestion, Elimination, Breathing, Hormones secretion, every cell especially brain cells, etc… Physical Improvements Resulting from Increased Blood Flow If a person is not drinking enough water, hematocrit rises, thus increasing risk of heart attacks and strokes. Also, a lack of water causes dehydration of red blood cells, making them less flexible, and they have a greater tendency to clot. Thicker, more viscous blood increases stroke and heart disease risk. Drinking more water decreases the risk of kidney stones by diluting the mineral content in the urinary system. Consuming liberal amounts of water may also decrease the risk of urinary tract infections. When blood sugars are running high, the kidneys lose sugar, and the sugar takes water with it. Diabetes is associated with increased blood viscosity or thickness. As the blood sugar level is brought under better control, viscosity tends to improve. "Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun" (Ecclesiastes 11:7). Sunshine helps produce vitamin D. All would become ill without it. It is one of nature's most powerful healing agents. The Bible reveals the source of healing, spiritual sunlight. "But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings" (Malachi 4:2).
Moderation should be in diet, work, sleep, study, dress, etc… Abstain from Alcohol, Tobacco products, Drugs of abuse, Caffeine containing drinks – Tea / Coffee / Cola’s etc… Ø Adverse effects - The mind in discernment and judgement, Irritates stomach, Clogs the living machine, Poisons the body cells. Ø Buys – Wretchedness, Poverty, Disease, Degradation, Lust, Crime, Death, etc… Temperance means “total abstinence from substances that are harmful and moderate use of substances that are helpful. The World Health Organization has taken the same position, now advocating “no alcohol” as the standard. The BBC News Website traces the recent wave of smoking bans around the world as governments seek to improve the health of their populations. Alcohol Effects : Binge drinking can cause blackouts, memory loss and anxiety. Long-term drinking can result in permanent brain damage, serious mental health problems and alcohol dependence or alcoholism. Young people's brains are particularly vulnerable because the brain is still developing during their teenage years. Alcohol can damage parts of the brain, affecting behavior and the ability to learn and remember. Risk factor for cancers of the mouth and throat, cause high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke. Effects kidneys, lungs, liver, stomach, pancreas, intestine, bones, skin, etc….. Smoking Effects : One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of cancers. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels, causing fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels which lead to heart attack. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated. Passive smoking –Some of the immediate effects of passive smoking include eye irritation, headache, cough, sore throat, dizziness and nausea. They have a 25 per cent increased risk of heart disease and lung cancer. Almost half of all children in the UK are exposed to tobacco smoke at home. Passive smoking increases the risk of lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia and bronchiolitis in children. Drugs Effects : An addict usually loses interest in many areas of life, including school, sports, family, and friends. Use can lead to feelings of paranoia and anxiety, memory and judgment are affected, and have a distorted view of time and distance. Also cause difficulty in differentiating reality and fantasy, and causes problems concentrating and severe headaches. Often used to enhance sex drive, physical effect on the receptors in the brain reduces the ability to feel pleasure. Users soon find that their sole purpose in life is to have more of the drug that their body has become dependant on. Problems with Moderate Caffeine Use Are you willing to take the risk of continuing your caffeine habit? Many have become habituated—if not addicted—to moderate or large amounts of caffeine. To illustrate your approach to this decision, assume that you are planning to build a new house. You find a place on a nice piece of property, but the land is over an old toxic waste dump. Some experts tell you that there is no proof of any risk from living above that dump. Others have grounds for concern that living there will increase your risk of cancers of the kidney, breast, pancreas, ovary, bladder, and colon. Do you roll the dice and move in, or do you say, “Why take the risk?” Caffeine not only increases the theoretical risk of cancer, it also brings a host of other problems in its train. Coffee and/or caffeine are linked to an increased risk of such problems as miscarriages, low birth weight babies, worsening depression, anxiety and fatigue, elevated blood pressure, heart palpitations, heart disease, bone loss and osteoporosis, and other maladies. Take 10-20 deep breathes several times a day – out doors better than indoors. Reading aloud, Singing, Climbing stairs or hills etc…Increases efficiency of lungs. Country life is better than city life. Ø Refreshes - Circulation of blood, Strengths body, Soothes the nerves, Composes mind, Helps digestion, Eliminates waste, Enhances good sleep and Relieves stress, fatigue, head ache, etc… Negatively charged ions in air have remarkable effects An environment of negatively charged ions truly has remarkable effects. Some of the most impressive have to do with behaviour. Good quality negatively ionized air is found in abundance in natural outdoor environments, especially around evergreen trees, beach surf, or after a thunderstorm. In one study, normal children and those with learning disabilities showed measurable improvements in brain function. Positively charged ions in air have adverse effects Windstorms bring an abundance of unwanted positive ions with them. During these storms, individuals develop problems with increased anxiety and suspicion, migraine headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, eye problems, irritability, respiratory congestion, etc. Negatively charged air is also destroyed by recirculating air in buildings, tobacco smoke, city smog, and other pollutants. Get to bed before 10:00 P.M. 1 hour of sleep before midnight is equal to 2 -3 hours sleep after midnight. 6-8 hours sleep is essential, during sleep the body and mental functions are restored. Ø Resolves - Irritability, Memory loss, Depression, Grief, Anxiety, Discontentment, Remorse, Guilt, Distrust, Body repairs, Concentration difficulty, Prevents disease, etc… Vitamin R (Rest) Comes in four Kinds Vitamin R1 is Sleep or daily rest - If you do not feel wide awake and energetic throughout your waking hours, you are likely sleeping too little. Vitamin R2 is the Weekly rest - In addition to sleeping each night, we need a weekly day of rest. Just as the body has a natural daily clock (circadian rhythm), it also has a weekly clock (circaseptan rhythm). Circa-septan rhythms are just that: body rhythms that run about seven days in length. Because God made it so and such a priority is one of the beauties of God’s Sabbath commandment.– Genesis 2:1-3 & Exodus 20:8-11. Vitamin R3 is Recreation - We need to take time to get away from work, physical tensions, and mental stresses of life. Activities such as gardening, hiking, sports, cross country skiing, walking, and dozens of other options. These activities provide a mental break from the routine. Vitamin R4 is Meditation - Is also essential and should be done at least on a daily basis. Prayer is the breath of the soul, figuratively speaking. Meditation and prayer provide a form of rest that is potent form of release from stress, tension, and anxiety. Laws of nature being the laws of God are designed for our good. Good health does not depend on chance; health is the result of obedience to God’s laws. Ø The human-Divine connection takes place in the frontal lobes of the brain, where moral judgements are made. Faith in God Favours Good Health For instance, consider the dietary habit of eating red meat. The more red meat an individual consumes, the higher the cholesterol, blood pressure, heart disease risk, cancer risk, renal failure risk, etc. tends to be. But why is a certain individual a heavy meat eater? We have to go deeper to find the answer. If a person grew up eating meat and potatoes, guess what he tends to eat now? If he grew up consuming caffeine beverages, guess what beverages he prefers now? The particular culture that individual grew up in largely determines the habits he has now. Fortunately, the illustration does not end there. There is always that “one person” who grew up eating meat and potatoes and had parents that smoke and drank who does not smoke, does not drink, and is a vegetarian. Why did that person become “counter-culture” and choose different habits? That individual let his own personal choices and values take precedence over his culture. Ultimately, every person’s own personal choices become a deeper reason than culture for his set of habits. The kinds of choices a person makes and values If you wish download the book click here |
